Summary

A German Shepherd dog with a subconjunctival mass was diagnosed with a hibernoma. Surgical excision was successful, with no tumor regrowth observed 14 months post-operation.

Background:

  • A 10-year-old German Shepherd presented with a subconjunctival swelling.
  • The mass, located in the ventral fornix of the left orbit, changed in size and color over two years.

Observation:

  • Surgical excision of the mass was performed.
  • Histopathologic evaluation confirmed the diagnosis of a hibernoma.

Findings:

  • The excised mass was a hibernoma.
  • No evidence of tumor recurrence was noted 14 months after surgical removal.

Implications:

  • Hibernomas are rare, benign tumors that can occur in the orbit.
  • Surgical excision appears to be an effective treatment for canine orbital hibernomas.
  • This case highlights the importance of histopathologic evaluation for accurate diagnosis and treatment planning.
