Cavernomas, or brain vascular malformations, can form spontaneously in adults. New research suggests these lesions may arise from angiogenic proliferation due to microhemorrhage from various causes.

- Traditionally considered congenital, evidence suggests de novo formation, particularly in familial cases or post-radiotherapy.

- A 5-year MRI study tracked a 56-year-old woman with no prior risk factors.
- The patient developed and exhibited growth of brain cavernomas from previously normal brain tissue.
- Throughout the observation period, the patient remained asymptomatic.
Findings:
- Cavernoma formation and growth were observed in a patient without typical risk factors.
- The findings support the hypothesis of de novo cavernoma development.
- The study proposes a novel etiology for sporadic cavernomas.
