    Summary

Tetralogy of Fallot (TOF) involves four heart defects. Surgical repair offers an excellent long-term survival prognosis for children, with nursing care crucial for recovery and family support.

    Area of Science:

    • Pediatric Cardiology
    • Congenital Heart Disease
    • Surgical Intervention

    Background:

    • Tetralogy of Fallot (TOF) is a complex congenital heart defect characterized by four anatomical abnormalities: ventricular septal defect (VSD), pulmonic stenosis, dextroposition of the aorta, and right ventricular hypertrophy.
    • The management of TOF involves ongoing discussions regarding surgical palliation versus primary intracardiac repair.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To discuss the occurrence, physiology, medical interventions, and nursing implications of Tetralogy of Fallot (TOF).
    • To highlight the prognosis and nursing care strategies for infants and children diagnosed with TOF.

    Main Methods:

    • Review of medical literature concerning Tetralogy of Fallot (TOF).
    • Discussion of surgical approaches, including palliation and primary repair.
    • Exploration of nursing responsibilities in pre-operative preparation, post-operative care, and family support.

    Main Results:

    • Intracardiac repair for TOF in children demonstrates an excellent prognosis, with approximately 90% survival rates 10 years post-repair.
    • Surgical palliation effectively increases pulmonary arterial flow, reduces cyanosis, and leads to measurable clinical improvement in infants.

    Conclusions:

    • Children undergoing intracardiac repair for TOF have a favorable long-term survival outlook.
    • Comprehensive nursing care, encompassing physical and emotional support for the child and family, is vital for successful management and recovery from TOF surgery.
