Skin Cancer

Skin cancer is a type of cancer that occurs when there is an abnormal growth of skin cells, usually triggered by damage to the DNA within the skin cells. It is primarily caused by exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun or artificial sources like tanning beds. Background:

Primary oral mucosal melanoma is a rare malignancy, comprising 0.2-8% of all melanomas.
It arises from melanocytes in the oral mucosa, either de novo or from benign lesions.
This neoplasm is known for its aggressive behavior, unpredictability, and poor prognosis.

Purpose of the Study:

To report a clinical case of primary oral mucosal melanoma.
To discuss the presentation and characteristics of this rare oral cancer.

Main Methods:

Case report of a 52-year-old female patient.
Clinical examination focusing on oral lesions.

Main Results:

The patient presented with black discoloration of the maxillary gingiva and palate.
Diagnosis of oral melanoma was established.

Conclusions:

Oral mucosal melanoma is a highly aggressive cancer with a dismal prognosis.
Early diagnosis and understanding of its clinical presentation are crucial for patient outcomes.
