This study analyzed 50 ecstasy tablets from Iran (2007-2008), finding 3,4-methylenedioxymethamphetamine (MDMA) in 80%. Some tablets contained other substances like ketamine or caffeine instead of MDMA.
Area of Science:
- Forensic Chemistry
- Analytical Chemistry
- Pharmacology
Background:
- Ecstasy (MDMA) is a widely used recreational drug.
- Illicit drug analysis is crucial for public health and law enforcement.
- Understanding the composition of seized drugs aids in identifying trends and risks.
Purpose of the Study:
- To characterize the physical and chemical properties of ecstasy tablets seized in Iran between 2007 and 2008.
- To identify the active ingredients and quantify the 3,4-methylenedioxymethamphetamine (MDMA) content.
- To investigate potential adulterants and variations in tablet composition.
Main Methods:
- Physical examination including appearance, marking, color, weight, diameter, and thickness.
- Chemical analysis using color tests (Marquis, Simon's, Chen's, Gallic acid).
- Chromatographic techniques (TLC, GC-MS, LC-MS) for identification and quantification of active compounds and residual solvents.
Main Results:
- 50 ecstasy tablets were analyzed; 80% contained 3,4-methylenedioxymethamphetamine (MDMA) hydrochloride, ranging from 60-180 mg.
- Tablet weights varied (96-308 mg) with no strong correlation to MDMA content.
- Adulterants such as ketamine, phenmetrazine, ephedrine, caffeine, and tramadol were detected in some tablets; 20% lacked MDMA.
Conclusions:
- Significant variability exists in the composition of seized ecstasy tablets.
- MDMA content does not reliably correlate with tablet weight.
- The presence of adulterants highlights potential risks and the need for ongoing drug monitoring.
