Multiple sclerosis (MS) patients exhibit higher rates of osteoporosis and osteopenia, with bone mineral density (BMD) significantly lower in the femur. Immobility is a key factor in this bone loss, necessitating its management in MS treatment protocols.

Background:

  • Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a demyelinating disease associated with patient disability.
  • Emerging data indicate an elevated risk of osteoporosis in MS patients.
  • This study investigates osteoporosis prevalence and factors influencing bone mineral density (BMD) in MS.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To determine the prevalence of osteoporosis in relapsing-remitting MS patients.
  • To identify factors associated with reduced bone mineral density (BMD) in MS.
  • To assess the relationship between MS disability, quality of life, and BMD.

Main Methods:

  • Recruited 51 relapsing-remitting MS patients and 407 healthy controls.
  • Measured femoral and lumbar bone mineral density (BMD) using Dual Energy X-ray Absorptiometry (DXA).
  • Assessed MS disability with the Expanded Disability Status Scale (EDSS) and quality of life using the MSIS-29 scale.

Main Results:

  • 18% of MS patients were osteoporotic and 43% osteopenic.
  • Femoral BMD was significantly lower in MS patients compared to controls (P < 0.001).
  • EDSS score, quality of life, and disease duration correlated significantly with BMD.

Conclusions:

  • Bone loss is an inevitable consequence of multiple sclerosis.
  • Immobility is identified as the primary factor contributing to BMD loss in MS patients.
  • Osteoporosis management should be integrated into comprehensive MS treatment plans.
