Migraine without aura is linked to a higher risk of hypertension in Iranians. Physicians should monitor these patients closely for elevated blood pressure and avoid hypertension-provoking medications.
Area of Science:
- Neurology
- Cardiology
- Epidemiology
Background:
- Migraine with aura (MA) is a known cardiovascular disease risk factor.
- Conflicting evidence exists regarding cardiovascular risk factors in migraineurs without aura (MO).
- This study investigates cardiovascular risk factors in Iranian MO patients.
Purpose of the Study:
- To assess the association between cardiovascular risk factors and migraine without aura in an Iranian population.
- To identify specific cardiovascular risks prevalent in individuals with MO.
Main Methods:
- A case-control study involving 347 MO patients and 267 non-migraineurs.
- Evaluated prevalence of hypertension, hyperglycemia, dyslipidemia, obesity, smoking, and family history of coronary artery disease.
- Used odds ratios (ORs) with 95% confidence intervals (95% CI) to determine associations.
Main Results:
- Migraineurs without aura showed a significantly increased risk of hypertension (ORadj = 1.9; P = 0.029).
- No significant differences were observed in hyperglycemia, dyslipidemia, obesity, smoking, or family history of early coronary artery disease between groups.
Conclusions:
- Hypertension is more prevalent in Iranian migraineurs without aura compared to non-migraineurs.
- Physicians should exercise increased vigilance in evaluating MO patients for hypertension.
- Caution is advised regarding prescribing medications that may exacerbate hypertension in this population.
