Aging reduces limb movement coordination, but rhythmic seated stepping accuracy is maintained in older adults, even at faster paces. This suggests specific motor control adaptations with age.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the influence of aging on seated stepping variability.
  • To compare the stepping accuracy of young and elderly adults across different metronome paces.

Main Methods:

  • Healthy young (n=26) and elderly (n=15) adults performed seated stepping synchronized to metronome beats (90-140 bpm).
  • Foot contact was monitored, and time-series coefficient of variation (CV) was calculated to assess stepping variability.
  • Seated stepping was performed on force plates.

Main Results:

  • Elderly adults exhibited significantly higher seated stepping CVs than young adults, indicating reduced accuracy.
  • Stepping variability increased sharply at higher metronome paces (130-140 bpm) for both groups.
  • The difference in CV between young and elderly adults was negligible at 120 bpm.

Conclusions:

  • While overall stepping accuracy decreases with age, rhythmic seated stepping shows resilience.
  • The findings suggest that the decline in motor control with aging may affect gait more than rhythmic seated movements.
  • Interventions aimed at improving rhythmic motor control in older adults could be beneficial.
