Area of Science:

  • Rehabilitation Medicine
  • Neuroscience
  • Biomedical Engineering

Background:

  • Stroke frequently results in hemiplegia, impacting balance, body symmetry, and functional mobility.
  • Conventional physical therapy is a cornerstone in stroke rehabilitation.
  • Visual biofeedback presents a potential adjunct to enhance therapeutic outcomes.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the efficacy of balance training with visual biofeedback on balance, body symmetry, and function in individuals with post-stroke hemiplegia.
  • To compare the effects of visual biofeedback-enhanced training against conventional physical therapy alone.

Main Methods:

  • A randomized controlled trial with a blinded evaluator was conducted.
  • Twenty adult stroke survivors with hemiplegia were recruited.
  • The experimental group received conventional physical therapy plus balance training with Wii Fit® visual biofeedback; the control group received conventional physical therapy alone for five weeks.

Main Results:

  • No statistically significant intergroup differences were observed in any assessed variables.
  • Both the experimental and control groups showed significant improvements in body symmetry, static and functional balance, functional mobility, and independence in activities of daily living (intragroup analysis).

Conclusions:

  • Balance training incorporating visual biofeedback (Wii Fit®) can improve outcomes in stroke survivors.
  • Conventional physical therapy alone demonstrated comparable effectiveness to the combined approach in this study population.
