Summary

Pit counting in peripheral blood may not accurately reflect spleen function in certain anemias. Erythrocyte pitting indicates splenic hypofunction, but this study found normal spleen activity in patients with megaloblastic anemia, iron-deficient anemia, and HbC diseases.
