    Summary

Laparoscopic appendectomy is a safe and feasible surgical option for acute appendicitis in elderly patients. This study found no significant differences in outcomes between laparoscopic and open appendectomy in this age group.

    Area of Science:

    • Surgical procedures
    • Gastrointestinal surgery
    • Geriatric surgery

    Background:

    • Acute appendicitis is a common condition requiring surgical intervention.
    • Appendectomy, the surgical removal of the appendix, is frequently performed worldwide.
    • The elderly population presents unique considerations for surgical management.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To compare the outcomes of laparoscopic appendectomy versus open appendectomy in elderly patients.
    • To evaluate the safety and feasibility of laparoscopic appendectomy in geriatric patients with acute appendicitis.

    Main Methods:

    • Retrospective review of elderly patients undergoing appendectomy for acute appendicitis between January 2006 and July 2012.
    • Analysis of 39 procedures: 20 open appendectomies (Group O) and 19 laparoscopic appendectomies (Group L).
    • Comparison of intraoperative and peri-operative variables between the two groups.

    Main Results:

    • No statistically significant differences were observed in intraoperative variables between the laparoscopic and open appendectomy groups.
    • Similarly, no statistically significant differences were found in peri-operative variables between the two surgical techniques.
    • Both methods demonstrated comparable outcomes in the elderly cohort.

    Conclusions:

    • Laparoscopic appendectomy is a safe and feasible surgical technique for treating acute appendicitis in elderly patients.
    • The findings support the use of minimally invasive approaches in geriatric surgical care.
    • Further research may explore long-term outcomes and cost-effectiveness.
