    Summary

    Rift Valley fever outbreaks occurred in Namibia in 2010. Molecular analysis revealed the virus strain was closely related to those from South African outbreaks.

    Background:

    • Rift Valley fever (RVF) is a mosquito-borne viral disease affecting livestock and humans.
    • RVF outbreaks pose significant economic and public health risks.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate and characterize Rift Valley fever virus (RVFV) outbreaks in Namibia during 2010.
    • To determine the genetic relationship of the Namibian RVFV strain to other regional strains.

    Main Methods:

    • Reporting of suspected RVF outbreaks to the National Veterinary Service.
    • Analysis of animal specimens from affected farms.
    • Molecular characterization of the circulating Rift Valley fever virus strain.
