Substance Use Disorders Affecting Sleep01:24

Substance Use Disorders Affecting Sleep

615
Substance use disorders involve a pattern of using drugs more extensively than intended and continuing use despite harmful consequences. This includes legal substances like alcohol and nicotine, as well as illegal drugs. These disorders often involve both physical and psychological dependence, reflecting compulsive use of substances that significantly alter thoughts, feelings, and behaviors, contributing to a major public health issue.

Drug Dependence01:17

Drug Dependence

1.9K
Medications are typically administered to achieve therapeutic effects. Some drugs can modify an individual's mood and perception, frequently resulting in various enjoyable experiences. However, this can result in drug dependency, a condition marked by continuous drug use despite potential negative consequences. Drug dependency primarily falls into two categories: psychological and physical dependence. Psychological dependence occurs when the pleasurable feelings induced by the drug...

Drug Abuse and Addiction: Pharmacological Phenomena

1.6K
Drug dependence, abuse, and addiction are complex phenomena that can precipitate various abnormal states. Physical dependence refers to a state of pharmacological adaptation to a drug. This adaptation often results in tolerance—a reduced response to the drug after repeated administrations. When the drug use is abruptly stopped, withdrawal symptoms occur due to the body's need to readjust from the pharmacologically induced imbalance. However, tolerance and withdrawal symptoms do not...

Rural Health Centers
Rural health centers are specialized care facilities in remote locations with very few medical personnel. The primary care providers who run the centers are mostly Registered Nurse Practitioners. Here, emergency treatment is provided to critically ill or injured patients before they are transferred to the closest hospital. Fortunately, due to advancement in technology, many rural healthcare facilities and professionals have easy access to diagnostic and treatment...

CNS Depressants: Barbiturates and Benzodiazepines

1.9K
CNS depressants include drugs from the category of barbiturates and benzodiazepines. They are valuable medications for managing anxiety disorders and insomnia. Barbiturates, once used to induce and maintain sleep, have been replaced mainly by benzodiazepines due to barbiturate's toxicity, tolerance, and overdose risks. They interact with GABAA receptors, leading to sedation at low doses and potentially coma and death at higher doses. Phenobarbital, a long-acting barbiturate, possesses...

Drug Concentrations: Measurements01:23

Drug Concentrations: Measurements

1.7K
Drug concentration is the quantity of a drug present in a biological sample. Measuring drug amounts in biological samples allows the clinician to understand how a drug is absorbed, distributed, metabolized, and excreted. Samples can be obtained through invasive or non-invasive methods. Invasive techniques involve surgical or parenteral interventions to gather blood, cerebrospinal fluid, or tissue biopsy. Conversely, non-invasive approaches provide samples like urine, feces, and saliva.

Summary

This study highlights high rates of smoking, early drug initiation, and prevalent health issues like Hepatitis C Virus among individuals in a detoxification unit. Improved services and early intervention are crucial for addressing substance dependence and related harms.

Area of Science:

  • Addiction Medicine
  • Public Health
  • Epidemiology

Background:

  • Substance dependence presents diverse health challenges.
  • Understanding the spectrum of issues in detoxification units is vital for public health.
  • Data collection on drug use, harm, and co-morbidities is essential.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To gather baseline data on various health and social issues among individuals seeking detoxification.
  • To assess the prevalence of drug dependence, smoking, and related harms.
  • To identify co-occurring medical and mental health conditions.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective chart review of 497 subjects and prospective data collection from 302 subjects at a voluntary detoxification unit.
  • Data collected included drug use, smoking habits, initiation age, injection-related harm, and co-morbid conditions.
  • Information was gathered through chart reviews and admission interviews.

Main Results:

  • High prevalence of smoking (97%), with 55% starting before age 15. 64% initiated drug use before 25.
  • Heroin and alcohol were the most common drugs (87%). 91% of heroin users injected, with 21% experiencing complications and 69% testing positive for Hepatitis C Virus.
  • Significant co-morbidities were observed, including medical disorders (44%), abnormal lab parameters (59%), and mental disorders (9%).

Conclusions:

  • There is a need for more accurate and reliable data collection on substance use and related health issues.
  • Existing services for individuals with substance dependence require enhancement.
  • Preventative strategies should prioritize early detection and intervention, supported by a central data collection body.
