Background:

The Diversity Recruitment and Education to Advance Minorities in the Nursing Workforce Program (DREAMWork) at UTC sought to improve nursing workforce diversity.
Baccalaureate nursing students require preparation for culturally sensitive and competent patient care.

Purpose of the Study:

To describe the development and implementation of an online summer course for the DREAMWork program.
To enhance cultural competence among baccalaureate nursing students through online learning.

Main Methods:

A four-week online summer program was implemented for 16 baccalaureate nursing students.
Course objectives were based on Campinha-Bacote's model of cultural competence.

Main Results:

Students reported increased comfort discussing personal prejudices and biases.
Participants demonstrated a deeper appreciation for providing culturally sensitive care.

Conclusions:

The online summer program effectively improved cultural competence in nursing students.
Expanding the online course for pre-nursing students is recommended to foster cultural competence before clinical courses.
