Conduct Disorder01:28

Conduct Disorder

1.0K
Conduct disorder is a complex mental health diagnosis characterized by a repetitive and persistent pattern of behavior that violates societal norms, the rights of others, or age-appropriate rules. The diagnostic criteria for conduct disorder require the presence of at least three problematic behaviors within the past 12 months, with at least one occurring in the past six months. These behaviors are grouped into four categories: aggression toward people and animals; destruction of property;...

Sex-linked Disorders

95.2K
Like autosomes, sex chromosomes contain a variety of genes necessary for normal body function. When a mutation in one of these genes results in biological deficits, the disorder is considered sex-linked.

Oppositional Defiant Disorder

1.5K
A persistent pattern of angry or irritable mood, defiant behavior, or vindictiveness characterizes Oppositional Defiant Disorder (ODD). Symptoms must occur over at least six months, involve interactions with individuals beyond siblings, and meet specific diagnostic criteria to be clinically significant. The disorder affects emotional regulation, social interactions, and behavior, often manifesting early in life and influencing long-term development and functioning.

Disorders of Leukocytes01:27

Disorders of Leukocytes

2.3K
Leukocyte disorders can lead to either leukopenia, characterized by an abnormally low leukocyte count, or leukocytosis, marked by a very high leukocyte number.
Leukopenia may result from bone marrow disorders, autoimmune diseases, and infectious diseases. For example, conditions such as multiple myeloma and aplastic anemia can impair the bone marrow's ability to produce adequate leukocytes. Similarly, autoimmune diseases like lupus and viral infections such as HIV can prompt the immune...

Learning Disabilities01:25

Learning Disabilities

711
Learning disabilities are cognitive disorders caused by neurological impairments that affect cognitive functions like language and reading, without indicating overall intellectual or developmental challenges. These disabilities differ from global intellectual or developmental disabilities as they are limited to distinct cognitive functions. Common learning disabilities include dysgraphia, dyslexia, and dyscalculia, each of which impacts unique aspects of learning.

Area of Science:

  • Hematology
  • Oncology
  • Genetics

Background:

  • Chronic lymphocytic leukemia/small lymphocytic lymphoma (CLL/SLL) is predominantly diagnosed in older adults.
  • Pediatric cases of CLL/SLL are exceptionally rare in medical literature.

Observation:

  • A case of CLL/SLL is presented in a 17-year-old male patient.
  • Pathologic findings were consistent with classic CLL/SLL.

Findings:

  • The case exhibited an ATM deletion, a known genetic abnormality in CLL/SLL.
  • This genetic finding supports the diagnosis of CLL/SLL in this young patient.

Implications:

  • Standard CLL/SLL management guidelines are designed for elderly populations.
  • Optimal therapeutic strategies for pediatric CLL/SLL present a unique clinical challenge.
  • This case underscores the need for tailored treatment approaches in adolescent CLL/SLL.
