Summary

This study provides new individualized reference values for bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) in pregnant women. These values improve the accuracy of BIA measurements during gestation.

Background:

Purpose of the Study:

  • To generate specific reference values for bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) in a German cohort of healthy pregnant women.
  • To develop individualized reference equations for key BIA parameters, including total body water.
  • To enhance the accuracy of BIA assessments during pregnancy.

Main Methods:

  • A cohort of 90 healthy pregnant women (23+0 to 40+6 weeks gestation) was studied.
  • Bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) parameters were measured.
  • Multiple regression analysis was used to develop predictive formulae for individualized reference values, incorporating maternal height, weight, BMI, gestational age, hematocrit, and abdominal circumference.

Main Results:

  • New formulae were generated to calculate individualized reference values for BIA indices (resistance, reactance, phase angle, height(2)/resistance, total body water).
  • Individualized reference values resulted in more accurate BIA assessments compared to general or gestational age-specific mean values.

Conclusions:

  • This study presents the first reported reference values for BIA indices in a German collective of healthy pregnant women.
  • The developed multiple regression formulae enable the assessment of individualized reference values for BIA indices.
  • These findings support more precise BIA monitoring in pregnant individuals.
