Self-Report Tests of Personality01:22

Self-Report Tests of Personality

1.3K
Self-report inventories are objective personality assessments that use multiple-choice items or numbered scales, typically ranging from 1 (strongly disagree) to 5 (strongly agree). They are often called Likert scales after Rensis Likert. These inventories are widely used due to their ease of administration and cost-effectiveness. One of the most prominent examples is the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI), initially developed in the 1940s to assess abnormal personality traits.

The Ras Gene02:38

The Ras Gene

5.7K
The Ras-gene-encoded proteins are regulators of signaling pathways controlling cell proliferation, differentiation, or cell survival. The Ras-gene family in humans constitutes three primary members—the HRas, NRas, and KRas. These genes code for four functionally distinct yet closely related proteins—the HRas, NRas, KRas4A, and KRas4B. The involvement of mutant Ras genes in human cancer was first discovered in 1982 and is among the most common causes of human tumorigenesis.

Summary

The new Geneva Emotion Recognition Test (GERT) offers a more comprehensive and realistic measure of emotion recognition ability. This dynamic, multimodal test overcomes limitations of previous assessments, providing reliable results across various emotions.

Area of Science:

  • Psychology
  • Cognitive Neuroscience
  • Psychometrics

Background:

  • Existing emotion recognition ability (ERA) tests often lack ecological validity due to single-modality focus and limited emotion sets.
  • Current ERA assessments frequently suffer from unsatisfactory reliability.
  • There is a need for improved instruments to measure ERA comprehensively and accurately.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To develop and validate the Geneva Emotion Recognition Test (GERT).
  • GERT aims to enhance ecological validity through dynamic, multimodal stimuli (videos with sound).
  • The test incorporates a broad range of emotions and employs modern psychometric principles (item response theory).

Main Methods:

  • 295 participants viewed 108 dynamic, multimodal actor portrayals.
  • Participants identified one of 14 expressed emotions for each portrayal.
  • The Rasch model was applied to emotion subsets to select 83 final items for the GERT.

Main Results:

  • The Rasch model demonstrated a good fit for emotion subtests and the overall GERT.
  • Measurement precision of the GERT was found to be satisfactory.
  • Consistent with prior research, ERA declined with age, and women showed an ERA advantage.

Conclusions:

  • The Geneva Emotion Recognition Test (GERT) is a psychometrically sound instrument for assessing ERA.
  • GERT provides a more ecologically valid and comprehensive measure of emotion recognition compared to existing tests.
  • The findings support GERT's utility in research and clinical settings for evaluating nuanced emotional perception.
