Summary

Small for gestational age (SGA) neonates have a more than twofold increased risk of necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) compared to appropriate for gestational age (AGA) neonates. The severity of SGA did not correlate with NEC incidence in this study.

Background:

  • Small for gestational age (SGA) neonates face heightened risks of mortality and morbidity, including necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC).
  • Limited data exists on NEC incidence and risk factors specifically within SGA neonate populations.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To determine the incidence of NEC in a large cohort of SGA neonates.
  • To compare NEC incidence between SGA and appropriate for gestational age (AGA) neonates.

Main Methods:

  • A cohort study included SGA neonates without congenital malformations (2004-2013).
  • SGA neonates were matched by gestational age to a control group of AGA neonates.
  • NEC occurrence was recorded and analyzed for associations with SGA status and other risk factors.

Main Results:

  • The study matched 475 SGA neonates with 475 AGA neonates.
  • NEC incidence was 3.2% in SGA neonates versus 1.3% in AGA neonates (OR 2.55, p=0.047).
  • No significant association was found between SGA severity and NEC incidence across subgroups.

Conclusions:

  • SGA neonates exhibit a greater than twofold increased risk of developing NEC compared to AGA neonates.
  • The severity of being small for gestational age was not associated with NEC risk.
