Taxonomy01:31

Taxonomy

69.3K
Taxonomy is the science of defining and naming groups of biological organisms based on shared characteristics. It uses a hierarchy of increasingly inclusive categories with Latin names. The smallest units of taxonomy, species and genus, are used to assign a formal, taxonomic name to each species in a system. This classification system, referred to as binomial nomenclature, was formalized by Carolus Linnaeus in the 18th century.

Microbial Classification System

1.8K
Classification is the process of organizing organisms into hierarchically inclusive groups based on their phenotypic similarities or evolutionary relationships. A species comprises one or more strains, and closely related species are grouped into genera. Genera are further classified into families, families into orders, orders into classes, and so forth, up to the domain level, which is the broadest taxonomic rank derived from a combination of phenotypic and genotypic data. The nomenclature of...

The Tree of Life - Bacteria, Archaea, Eukaryotes

36.5K
The “tree of life” describes the evolution of life and the evolutionary relationships between organisms. The root of the tree is the common ancestor to all life on Earth. All other species radiate from this point, much like the branches of a tree. The numerous tips of these branches on the tree of life represent every living, or extant, species. Extinct species, which are species that no longer exist, can be found towards the center of the tree. Currently, these organisms, both...

Pollination and Flower Structure

62.6K
Flowers are the reproductive, seed-producing structures of angiosperms. Typically, flowers consist of sepals, petals, stamens, and carpels. Sepals and petals are the vegetative flower organs. Stamens and carpels are the reproductive organs.

Area of Science:

  • Biodiversity Science
  • Taxonomy
  • Informatics

Background:

  • The rapid pace of biodiversity data generation outpaces taxonomic community growth, creating a "taxonomic impediment."
  • This impediment has led to questioning taxonomy's relevance and the development of alternative methodologies.
  • Existing resources like experts and specimens are globally distributed but underutilized.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To issue a call to action for the aphid taxonomy community to increase output volume and comprehensiveness.
  • To propose a global aphid cybertaxonomy initiative.
  • To present a model for other taxonomic communities facing similar challenges.

Main Methods:

  • Mobilizing global experts and museum specimens through informatics technology.
  • Developing "cyberspecimens"—digitally rendered museum specimens for remote identification.
  • Creating open "cybertaxonomic" tools to facilitate large-scale taxonomic projects.

Main Results:

  • The proposed cybertaxonomy will enable ambitious, large-scale aphid identification projects.
  • It will enhance the accessibility and utility of global aphid taxonomic resources.
  • It offers a scalable model for other taxonomic fields.

Conclusions:

  • Global aphid cybertaxonomy is a viable solution to the "taxonomic impediment."
  • Informatics and digital tools are crucial for modernizing taxonomy.
  • This approach can revitalize taxonomy and serve as a model for broader biodiversity science.
