Background:

  • Peripapillary intrachoroidal cavitations (PICCs) are rare findings.
  • Understanding their prevalence and associations is crucial for diagnosing and managing high myopia.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To determine the prevalence, size, and location of PICCs.
  • To investigate associations between PICCs and ocular parameters in a population-based sample.

Main Methods:

  • The Beijing Eye Study 2011 included 3468 participants (mean age 64.6 years).
  • Enhanced depth imaging spectral-domain optical coherence tomography (OCT) and fundus photography were used.
  • PICCs were defined as choroidal thickening ≥ 200 μm at the optic disc border.

Main Results:

  • PICCs were detected in 16.9% of highly myopic subjects (n=89), but none in other refractive error groups.
  • Mean PICC width was 4.2 ± 2.3 hours of disc circumference and mean length was 1363 ± 384 μm.
  • PICCs were most frequently located inferiorly (40%) and associated with optic disc tilting and posterior staphylomata.

Conclusions:

  • The prevalence of PICCs is significant in highly myopic Chinese adults.
  • PICCs are primarily associated with optic disc tilting and posterior staphylomata.
  • No association was found between PICCs and axial length, refractive error, or systemic factors.
