Neointimal calcification after stenting (NIC) is linked to poorer kidney function and longer time post-stenting. Short-term NIC occurred in hemodialysis patients, while long-term NIC was seen with bare metal stents.
Area of Science:
- Cardiovascular Medicine
- Interventional Cardiology
- Nephrology
Background:
- Neointimal calcification after stenting (NIC) is a significant concern.
- The precise timing and incidence of NIC remain largely uncharacterized.
Purpose of the Study:
- To investigate the characteristics of neointimal calcification after stenting (NIC).
- To determine the factors influencing the development of NIC based on follow-up duration.
Main Methods:
- Analysis of 181 intravascular ultrasound images from patients who underwent stenting between June 2009 and June 2012.
- Patients were stratified into two groups: short-term follow-up (< 365 days) and long-term follow-up (≥ 365 days).
- Comparison of clinical parameters, including estimated glomerular filtration rate and time after stenting, between patients with and without NIC.
Main Results:
- Patients with NIC exhibited significantly lower estimated glomerular filtration rates (51 vs. 61 mL/minute/1.73 m²) and longer time after stenting (3198 vs. 211 days) compared to those without NIC.
- Short-term NIC (< 365 days) was exclusively observed in patients undergoing hemodialysis.
- Long-term NIC (≥ 365 days) was exclusively observed in patients with bare metal stents.
Conclusions:
- Neointimal calcification after stenting is associated with impaired renal function and extended periods post-stenting.
- Hemodialysis is a key factor for short-term NIC development.
- The type of stent, specifically bare metal stents, is linked to long-term NIC.
