    Summary

Herpes zoster can cause temporary bladder problems, including urinary retention, due to nerve inflammation. Symptoms resolved within weeks, indicating a transient neurogenic dysfunction of the urinary bladder.

    Area of Science:

    • Neurology
    • Urology
    • Virology

    Background:

    • Herpes zoster, a viral infection, can affect various nerve pathways.
    • Neurogenic bladder dysfunction presents with urinary symptoms and can have diverse etiologies.

    Observation:

    • Four patients developed transient neurogenic bladder dysfunction following the vesicular stage of herpes zoster.
    • Patients experienced slow urinary stream, complete urinary retention, and loss of sensation, requiring suprapubic catheterization.

    Findings:

    • Urodynamic studies indicated detrusor acontractility.
    • Cystoscopy revealed unilateral cystitis in affected patients.
    • Symptoms and residual urine resolved spontaneously within 2-3 weeks.

    Implications:

    • Herpes zoster can cause transient sacral meningo-radiculitis, leading to temporary bladder paralysis.
    • This highlights a potential neurological complication of herpes zoster affecting bladder function.
    • Early recognition and management are crucial for patients presenting with urinary retention post-herpes zoster infection.
