Five-Membered Heterocyclic Aromatic Compounds: Overview01:13

Five-Membered Heterocyclic Aromatic Compounds: Overview

4.4K
Heterocyclic aromatic compounds are cyclic compounds that are aromatic and have one or more heteroatoms—atoms other than carbon, in the ring. Depending upon the number of atoms present in the ring, they can be either five or six-membered. Examples of five-membered heterocyclic aromatic compounds include pyrrole, furan, thiophene, and imidazole. Pyrrole consists of one nitrogen atom having one lone pair of electrons. Furan and thiophene have one oxygen and one sulfur heteroatom,...

Cyclohexenones via Michael Addition and Aldol Condensation: The Robinson Annulation

2.3K
Robinson annulation is a base-catalyzed reaction for the synthesis of 2-cyclohexenone derivatives from 1,3-dicarbonyl donors (such as cyclic diketones, β-ketoesters, or β-diketones) and α,β-unsaturated carbonyl acceptors. Named after Sir Robert Robinson, who discovered it, this reaction yields a six-membered ring with three new C–C bonds (two σ bonds and one π bond).

Red Algae01:23

Red Algae

2.0K
Red algae, also known as rhodophytes, are primarily found in marine environments, though some species inhabit freshwater and terrestrial ecosystems. These organisms exist in both unicellular and multicellular forms, with some multicellular varieties reaching macroscopic sizes. As phototrophic organisms, red algae contain chlorophyll a; however, their chloroplasts lack chlorophyll b. Instead, they possess phycobiliproteins, which serve as major light-harvesting pigments, similar to those found in...

Aromatic Compounds: Overview01:25

Aromatic Compounds: Overview

11.8K
In general, the term ‘aromatic’ indicates a pleasant smell or fragrance from fresh flowers, freshly prepared coffee, etc. In the early history of organic chemistry, many benzene derivatives were isolated from the pleasant odor oils of the plants. For example, vanillin was isolated from the oil of vanilla, methyl salicylate from the oil of wintergreen, and cinnamaldehyde from the oil of cinnamon. They all had a pleasant odor; hence the name aromatic was given.
In 1825, Faraday...

Area of Science:

  • Natural Product Chemistry
  • Pharmacology
  • Medicinal Chemistry

Background:

  • Rhododendron species are a rich source of bioactive compounds.
  • Understanding the chemical constituents of Rhododendron mariae Hance is important for potential therapeutic applications.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To isolate and characterize new and known compounds from Rhododendron mariae Hance stems.
  • To evaluate the inhibitory effects of isolated compounds on nitric oxide production.

Main Methods:

  • Extraction of dried stems of Rhododendron mariae Hance using ethanol.
  • Structure elucidation using Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR), High-Resolution Mass Spectrometry (HR-MS), Circular Dichroism (CD), and Optical Rotatory Dispersion (ORD) experiments.
  • Assay of nitric oxide production in lipopolysaccharide-activated mouse macrophages.

Main Results:

  • Five new compounds, including epoxylignan and dihydrobenzofuran derivatives, were isolated and identified.
  • Twelve known compounds were also isolated from the same plant extract.
  • Compounds 2, 3, 6, and 17 demonstrated significant inhibition of nitric oxide production.

Conclusions:

  • The study successfully identified novel chemical entities from Rhododendron mariae Hance.
  • The isolated compounds, particularly 2, 3, 6, and 17, possess anti-inflammatory potential due to their nitric oxide inhibitory activity.
