Neurogenesis and Regeneration of Nervous Tissue01:15

Neurogenesis and Regeneration of Nervous Tissue

2.1K
In the CNS, neurogenesis, the birth of new neurons from stem cells, is limited to the hippocampus in adults. In other regions of the brain and spinal cord, neurogenesis is almost non-existent due to inhibitory influences from neuroglia, especially oligodendrocytes, and the absence of growth-stimulating cues. The myelin produced by oligodendrocytes in the CNS inhibits neuronal regeneration. Furthermore, astrocytes proliferate rapidly after neuronal damage, forming scar tissue that physically...

Neuroplasticity01:01

Neuroplasticity

2.6K
Neuroplasticity reflects the brain's remarkable capacity to adapt and evolve, responding dynamically to learning, experiences, or injury by reorganizing its neural circuitry. This reorganization involves creating new neural connections and refining old ones through a series of biological processes that contribute to the brain's lifelong development and adaptability.

Area of Science:

  • Neuroscience
  • Biomedical Engineering
  • Regenerative Medicine

Background:

  • Focal brain injury disrupts neural pathways, leading to functional deficits.
  • Restoring communication between cortical areas is crucial for brain repair.
  • Neural interface systems offer potential for bridging damaged brain circuits.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To test if a neural prosthesis can facilitate recovery after brain injury.
  • To investigate if a neural prosthesis can restore motor function by bridging cortical areas.
  • To demonstrate the efficacy of neural interfaces in promoting functional brain repair.

Main Methods:

  • A rat model of focal brain injury was used, targeting the primary motor cortex.
  • A neural prosthesis was implanted to discriminate action potentials in the premotor cortex.
  • The prosthesis triggered electrical stimulation in the somatosensory cortex, creating a functional bridge.

Main Results:

  • Rats with the neural prosthesis showed significantly improved reaching and grasping within 1 week.
  • Motor functions returned to pre-injury levels within 2 weeks.
  • Analysis confirmed enhanced functional connectivity between stimulated cortical areas.

Conclusions:

  • Neural interface systems can effectively bridge damaged neural pathways.
  • Spike-triggered stimulation via a neural prosthesis promotes functional recovery after brain injury.
  • This study provides proof-of-concept for using neural prostheses in brain repair strategies.
