    Background:

    • Acute encephalopathies (AEs) present complex diagnostic challenges.
    • EEG background abnormalities are common in AEs, but their prognostic significance requires further elucidation.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To explore the utility of quantitative EEG (qEEG) in assessing patients with AEs.
    • To correlate qEEG findings with patient outcomes.

    Main Methods:

    • Patients with AEs and EEG background abnormalities were categorized into favorable (Group A) and unfavorable (Group B) outcome groups.
    • EEGLAB software was employed for qEEG analysis, generating spectral power graphics for all channels.
    • Statistical comparisons were conducted between the outcome groups.

    Main Results:

    • Spectral analysis revealed theta and alpha frequency band peaks in 84% of patients with favorable outcomes (Group A).
    • A delta frequency peak was observed in only one patient with an unfavorable outcome (Group B).
    • Lower frequencies from posterior electrodes were noted in Group B patients.

    Conclusions:

    • Quantitative EEG (qEEG) demonstrates potential as a tool for prognostic determination in AEs.
    • Distinct qEEG spectral patterns may differentiate between favorable and unfavorable outcomes in AE patients.
