Area of Science:

  • Orthopedic Surgery
  • Hand Surgery
  • Trauma Reconstruction

Background:

  • Complex hand trauma requires specialized surgical techniques for optimal functional recovery.
  • Thumb amputation at the metacarpal level presents significant challenges due to associated soft tissue and neurovascular damage.

Observation:

  • A patient presented with incomplete left thumb amputation at the metacarpal level.
  • Associated injuries included extensor pollicis longus (EPL) and flexor pollicis longus (FPL) tendon avulsion from the tenomuscular junction.

Findings:

  • Metacarpal bone fixation was performed, followed by ulnar digital artery anastomosis and digital nerve coaptation.
  • Reconstructive procedures included transfer of the extensor indicis proprius (EIP) to the EPL tendon and side-to-side suturing of the FPL to the index finger's deep flexor tendon.
