Tooth Anatomy01:21

Tooth Anatomy

2.8K
The human tooth enables us to eat a variety of foods, speak clearly, and even aid in shaping our faces. Teeth are composed of various elements that work together. Here's a detailed look at the anatomy of a human tooth.
The Crown, Neck, and Root
The visible part of the tooth is referred to as the crown. It's covered by enamel, the hardest substance in the human body. The crown is uniquely shaped for each type of tooth, allowing for different functions such as cutting, tearing, or...

Bioavailability Study Design: Healthy Subjects Versus Patients

248
Bioavailability studies are essential for evaluating a drug's therapeutic efficacy and understanding its absorption patterns under various physiological conditions. Conducting such studies on target patient populations provides more relevant data by simulating real-world disease states. However, practical challenges often necessitate the use of young, healthy adult volunteers as study subjects.Patients may exhibit altered drug absorption patterns due to the effects of the disease itself,...

Blinding01:11

Blinding

2.9K
Blinding is a commonly used method of not telling participants which treatment a subject is receiving. Blinding is a critical part of a randomized control trial or RCT. It reduces the bias that affects the results. In an RCT, blinding is used in the form of a placebo. A placebo effect occurs when untreated subjects falsely believe they have received the treatment and report improved symptoms. A placebo or a dummy treatment is administered to subjects to negate the bias caused by such an effect.

Assessment of the Mouth01:26

Assessment of the Mouth

1.6K
A thorough mouth assessment, including inspection and palpation of the lips, gums, tongue, tonsils, uvula, and pharynx, is crucial in detecting potential health issues. Diseases ranging from oral cancer to systemic conditions like diabetes could be identified early through careful oral examination. This article provides a detailed guide on conducting a comprehensive mouth assessment.
Mouth Inspection
The inspection begins with visually examining the mouth for symmetry, color, and size.

Summary

High-fluoride toothpaste (5000 ppm F) significantly improved root caries surface hardness in adults compared to regular fluoride toothpaste (1350 ppm F). This study highlights the benefit of high-fluoride toothpaste for managing root caries.

Area of Science:

  • Dental research
  • Cariology
  • Preventive dentistry

Background:

  • Root caries is a prevalent issue in adults, particularly among older populations.
  • Conventional fluoride toothpastes may not be sufficient for managing existing root caries lesions.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the effectiveness of high-fluoride toothpaste in improving the surface hardness of root caries lesions in adults.
  • To compare the efficacy of 5000 ppm F toothpaste against 1350 ppm F toothpaste for root caries treatment.

Main Methods:

  • A single-blind, multicenter, randomized controlled trial involving 130 adult patients with root caries.
  • Patients were allocated to either a high-fluoride (5000 ppm F) or regular-fluoride (1350 ppm F) toothpaste group.
  • Clinical examinations and surface hardness scoring were conducted at baseline, 3 months, and 6 months.

Main Results:

  • No significant differences between groups at baseline in gender, age, or surface hardness.
  • The high-fluoride toothpaste group showed significantly improved surface hardness scores at 3 and 6 months (P < 0.0001).
  • No significant interaction between time-point and group was observed.

Conclusions:

  • Twice-daily application of high-fluoride toothpaste (5000 ppm F) effectively enhances the surface hardness of untreated root caries lesions in adults.
  • High-fluoride toothpaste represents a superior option compared to regular fluoride toothpaste for managing root caries.
