Purpose of the Study:

  • To compare the effect of probiotic ice cream and probiotic curds on salivary mutans streptococci levels.
  • To evaluate changes in MS counts before and after consumption over a 7-day period.

Main Methods:

  • Forty caries-free children (12-14 years) were divided into four groups.
  • Groups received either probiotic or plain ice cream/curd for 7 days.
  • Saliva samples were analyzed at baseline, 1 hour, and 7 days post-consumption.

Main Results:

  • A reduction in salivary MS was observed 1 hour after consumption in all groups.
  • Probiotic ice cream and curds demonstrated a statistically significant reduction in MS counts after 7 days compared to controls (P < 0.001).
  • No significant difference was found between probiotic ice cream and probiotic curd in MS reduction.

Conclusions:

  • Probiotic products can displace pathogenic oral bacteria.
  • Probiotic ice cream and curds represent an alternative strategy for preventing enamel demineralization.
  • Further research can explore the long-term efficacy and specific strains for oral health.
