Positron Emission Tomography01:29

Positron Emission Tomography

6.2K
Positron emission tomography (PET) is a medical imaging technique involving radiopharmaceuticals — substances that emit short-lived radiation. Although the first PET scanner was introduced in 1961, it took 15 more years before radiopharmaceuticals were combined with the technique and revolutionized its potential.
One of the main requirements of a PET scan is a positron-emitting radioisotope, which is produced in a cyclotron and then attached to a substance used by the part of the body...

Area of Science:

  • Nuclear Medicine
  • Medical Imaging
  • Radiochemistry

Background:

  • Multicenter Positron Emission Tomography/Computed Tomography (PET/CT) studies are crucial for drug development and clinical research.
  • Ensuring quantitative accuracy and harmonized image quality across different institutions and scanners is a significant challenge.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To assess the feasibility of achieving quantitative accuracy and consistent image quality in multicenter studies using zirconium-89 (89Zr) PET/CT.
  • To evaluate the impact of different scanners and calibration methods on quantitative results.

Main Methods:

  • Five PET/CT scanners from three vendors were utilized for the study.
  • Activity measurements involved central and local dose calibrators, with cross-calibration experiments to determine accuracy and noise.
  • Image quality was assessed using various Volume-of-Interest (VOI) methods, including VOI 3Dpeak, and analyzed before and after post-reconstruction smoothing.

Main Results:

  • PET/CT accuracy ranged from -3% to 10%, with image noise between 13% and 22%.
  • The VOI 3Dpeak method yielded the most reproducible recovery coefficients.
  • Local dose calibrator calibration to a central standard reduced activity assay differences to within 6%.

Conclusions:

  • Quantitative accuracy and harmonized image quality are attainable in multicenter 89Zr PET/CT studies.
  • Standardized calibration and VOI analysis methods are key to achieving reliable multicenter imaging results.
