Disorders of the Female Reproductive System01:24

Disorders of the Female Reproductive System

4.5K
The female reproductive system can be affected by several disorders, including Premenstrual Syndrome (PMS), Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder (PMDD), endometriosis, and various forms of cancer. PMS and PMDD are cyclical conditions that cause physical and emotional distress, with symptoms that include edema, mood swings, and food cravings. PMDD is a more severe form of PMS characterized by increased symptom severity that peaks during the luteal phase and tends to improve or resolve shortly after...

Assessment of the Rectum and Anus

2.1K
Evaluating the rectum and anus plays a crucial role in conducting a thorough physical examination of the gastrointestinal system. Although it may be uncomfortable and often embarrassing for the patient, it holds immense diagnostic value, particularly in detecting gastrointestinal diseases and abnormalities. This guide will explain how to perform this assessment using inspection and palpation methods.

Ovarian Cycle01:27

Ovarian Cycle

5.4K
The menstrual cycle includes a critical component known as the ovarian cycle, which undergoes two main phases each month—the follicular phase and the luteal phase. The follicular phase is variable and averaging around 14 days. Ovulation, triggered by a surge in luteinizing hormone (LH), marks the transition between the two phases. The second phase, the luteal phase, is relatively consistent, lasting approximately 14 days, and is marked by the activity of the corpus luteum. While a cycle...

Summary

Severe adenomyosis can cause elevated CA125 levels, correlating with uterine size. However, enlarged uteri from fibroids do not significantly raise CA125, suggesting benign causes for elevated levels.

Area of Science:

  • Gynecology
  • Oncology

Background:

  • Adenomyosis is a condition causing uterine enlargement.
  • CA125 is a tumor marker often monitored in gynecological conditions.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the relationship between uterine size due to adenomyosis and CA125 levels.
  • To differentiate CA125 levels in adenomyosis versus uterine fibroids.

Main Methods:

  • Studied 50 women with uterine enlargement due to severe adenomyosis and elevated CA125.
  • Compared CA125 levels in adenomyosis with those in uterine fibroids of similar size.

Main Results:

  • Uterine enlargement (>12 weeks size or 240 cm³ volume) from severe adenomyosis correlated with increased CA125 levels.
  • Significantly elevated CA125 levels were observed in some adenomyosis cases.

  • Uterine fibroids did not cause a significant rise in CA125 levels.
  • Conclusions:

    • Elevated CA125 in the context of uterine enlargement may indicate adenomyosis rather than malignancy.
    • Benign causes like adenomyosis can lead to high CA125, reducing anxiety when clinical findings are benign.
