Modeling in Therapy01:26

Modeling in Therapy

823
Modeling, a key technique in therapy, uses observational learning to help clients acquire and practice new skills by watching therapists demonstrate desired behaviors. This approach, rooted in Albert Bandura's concept of vicarious learning, plays a significant role in therapeutic interventions for various psychological conditions, including social anxiety, ADHD, and depression.

Cognitive Therapy01:25

Cognitive Therapy

1.5K
Cognitive therapy, pioneered by Aaron T. Beck in the 1960s, is a structured approach to addressing psychological distress by focusing on the influence of thoughts on emotions and behaviors. All cognitive therapies involve the basic assumption that human beings have control over their feelings, and that how individuals feel about something depends on how they think about it. Unlike psychoanalytic methods that delve into unconscious processes or humanistic approaches emphasizing...

Self-Evaluation Maintenance Model01:29

Self-Evaluation Maintenance Model

423
The Self-Evaluation Maintenance (SEM) model offers a psychological framework to understand how individuals’ self-esteem is influenced by the achievements of others, particularly those with whom they share close personal bonds. The SEM model operates when personal rather than social identity guides individuals. Central to this model is the notion that individuals have an inherent desire to preserve a favorable self-image, which is continuously shaped by interpersonal comparisons and...

Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy

810
Cognitive-behavioral therapies (CBTs) are grounded in the belief that our thoughts profoundly influence our emotions and actions. Advocates of CBT emphasize three core assumptions: first, that cognitions are identifiable and measurable; second, that they are central to psychological functioning; and third, that irrational or maladaptive beliefs can be replaced with rational and adaptive ones. This transformative approach to therapy has paved the way for specific models such as Albert...

Nursing Process for Patient and Caregiver Teaching III: Evaluation and Documentation

2.4K
Evaluation of the teaching process enables the nurse to determine if the patient's learning needs were met and if training was effective. If the expected outcomes are not met, the care plan is revised, and additional education or reinforcement is provided. Nurses can ask questions after the session or obtain feedback to assess the patient's understanding of the topic.
Nurses can use several methods to evaluate patient outcomes. For example, oral questions can assess cognitive learning,...

Information Processing Approach

889
The information-processing theory of cognitive development centers on fundamental mental processes, including attention, memory, and problem-solving skills. Researchers in this field examine how cognitive abilities, such as working memory, evolve and influence children's overall development. Studies indicate that children with stronger working memory tend to excel in reading comprehension, math, and problem-solving compared to peers with less efficient memory skills. Low working memory is...

Summary

This pilot study developed a coding scheme and tested a train-the-trainer model for cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) skills. Observed skills improved, but self-reports were inflated compared to observed mastery.

Area of Science:

  • Psychology
  • Mental Health
  • Education

Background:

  • Disseminating evidence-based practices in mental health is crucial for improving youth care.
  • Existing training models may not adequately capture skill acquisition for supervisors and therapists.
  • A reliable method to assess skill development in therapeutic interventions is needed.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To develop a coding scheme for supervisor and therapist skill acquisition in cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT).
  • To investigate a pilot train-the-trainer model for disseminating CBT skills.
  • To compare self-reported versus observed skill mastery in a training program.

Main Methods:

  • A pilot train-the-trainer program was implemented with four supervisor-therapist dyads (N=8).
  • Master trainers taught CBT techniques to supervisors, who then trained therapists.
  • Skill acquisition and teaching strategies were assessed via coded role-plays using a new observational coding system.

Main Results:

  • The developed coding scheme, Therapy Process Observational Coding System for Child Psychotherapy (TPOC-CP), demonstrated excellent reliability (ICCs = 0.81-0.91).
  • Participants showed significant skill improvements in teaching and performing CBT techniques.
  • Self-reported skill mastery was higher than observed skill mastery.

Conclusions:

  • The study provides initial support for the train-the-trainer approach in disseminating evidence-based practices.
  • The developed coding scheme is a reliable tool for evaluating skill acquisition in psychotherapy training.
  • Further research is warranted to refine the evaluative approach for therapist training programs.
