Cutaneous mesenchymal tumours: an update

Mesenchymal tumours of the skin and subcutis are rare and characterised by extreme clinicopathological heterogeneity. Although all neoplasms of deeper soft tissue neoplasms may also occur in a superficial location, dermosubcutaneous neoplasms show a number of important clinical, morphological, and prognostic differences. In this review the following topics are discussed: (1) clinically important variants of dermatofibroma; (2) atypical fibroxanthoma and pleomorphic dermal sarcoma; (3) morphologically important variants of dermatofibrosarcoma protuberans; (4) post-radiation-associated vascular lesions; and (5) cutaneous perivascular neoplasms.
