1Centre de Recherche du Centre Hospitalier de l'Université de Montréal; Montreal, Québec, Canada;
Half of young adults who used waterpipe continued use 4 years later, often for occasional socializing. Predictors included parental smoking and marijuana use, while cigarette smoking was less frequent among sustained users.
Area of Science:
- Public Health
- Adolescent and Young Adult Health
- Substance Use Research
Background:
- Waterpipe smoking is a growing trend among North American youth.
- Long-term waterpipe use patterns in young adults are not well understood.
Purpose of the Study:
- To determine the frequency of sustained waterpipe use over four years in young adults.
- To identify predictors associated with sustained waterpipe use.
Main Methods:
- Prospective cohort study of 777 participants initially recruited in 1999.
- Waterpipe use assessed via mailed self-report questionnaires at ages 20 and 24.
- Multivariable logistic regression models analyzed 20 potential predictors.
Main Results:
- 51% of young adults who used waterpipe at age 20 reported continued use at age 24.
- Most sustained users (88%) smoked less than monthly.
- Parental smoking, employment, less frequent cigarette use, and more frequent marijuana use predicted sustained waterpipe use.
Conclusions:
- Approximately half of young adults maintain waterpipe use into their mid-twenties.
- Sustained waterpipe use is often occasional and linked to social activities.
- Findings highlight the persistence of waterpipe use and associated factors in young adulthood.
