Normal blood D-dimer concentrations: do they exclude pulmonary embolism?

Pulmonary embolism (PE) with normal D-dimer (DD) levels is uncommon but can be missed. Clinicians should consider PE in patients with prior PE or delayed testing, even with normal DD results.
