    Summary

    This study describes a rare malignant odontogenic tumor with ghost cells in a patient who developed aggressive maxilla cancer and died within a year. The findings highlight the aggressive nature of this rare ghost cell odontogenic tumor.

    Background:

    Observation:

    • A case report of an unusual malignant odontogenic tumor characterized by a high density of ghost cells.
    • The tumor presented as an aggressive lesion in the right maxilla of a 46-year-old male.
    • Metastasis to the lungs was observed, leading to the patient's death within one year of diagnosis.

    Findings:

    • Histological examination revealed columnar odontogenic epithelium, malignant epithelial components, microcysts, and extensive ghost cells with focal calcification.
    • Small areas suggestive of "dentinoid" formation were also noted.
    • The tumor exhibited aggressive behavior with rapid progression and metastasis.

    Implications:

    • This case expands the understanding of rare malignant odontogenic tumors.
    • It underscores the importance of recognizing ghost cell-rich lesions as potentially aggressive malignancies.
    • Further research is needed to clarify the relationship between this tumor and variants like the "dentinogenic ghost cell tumor".
