Fibrin sealant in experimental tubal microsurgery
Abstract:
This study compares the results of microsurgical tubal anastomosis performed using a fibrin sealant, 9-0 monofilament polyglycolic acid (PGA) suture, or fibrin sealant in combination with 9-0 PGA suture. Sixty rabbits were divided into three groups of 20 rabbits each. The pregnancy rate of the rabbits was 95%, 95%, and 85%, respectively; without any intervention, the fertility rate was 95% in 20 nonexperimental rabbits (control group). We conclude that fibrin adhesive employed for reanastomosing of the fallopian tube in rabbits, compared with synthetic microsutures, results in identical pregnancy rate and identical conditions of passage through the tubes. Fibrin sealant is absorbed more rapidly than absorbable microsutures, results in fewer adhesions, and shorter operating time. Thus, fibrin adhesive possibly provides an alternative to the traditional employment of sutures in gynecological microsurgery.
