[Evidences from J-EDIT for diabetes mellitus in the elderly]
1Local Independent Administrative Agency Tokyo Metropolitan Geriatric Hospital.
Abstract:
The high prevalence of diabetic complications including physical and functional disabilities decrease QOL of elderly patients with diabetes mellitus and increase the social burden. In order to elucidate clinical evidences for the prevention of cardiovascular disease (CVD) and disabilities, we have performed a multi-center 6-year prospective randomized controlled trial (RCT) for diabetes mellitus in the elderly, the Japanese Elderly Diabetes Intervention Trial (J-EDIT). J-EDIT has demonstrated that "the lower the better" appears doubtful for HbA1c, but seems to be true for LDL- and non-HDL-cholesterol. Intake of vegetable- and fish-rich diet improves metabolic control and prognosis of the patients. Maintenance/increase of physical activity is important to prevent CVD, especially stroke. Other several evidences from J-EDIT will be demonstrated also in this article.
