    Summary

    Bopindolol, a long-acting beta-blocker, was studied in healthy and hypertensive individuals. Renal function remained stable, showing no adverse effects on glomerular filtration rate or renal plasma flow during treatment.

    Background:

    • Beta-blockers are commonly prescribed antihypertensive medications.
    • Some beta-blockers can negatively impact renal function.
    • Bopindolol is a long-acting beta-blocking agent.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To assess the effect of bopindolol on renal function in healthy and hypertensive subjects.
    • To determine if bopindolol alters glomerular filtration rate (GFR) and renal plasma flow (RPF).

    Main Methods:

    • 10 healthy normotensive volunteers and 10 hypertensive patients received 1 mg bopindolol daily for 21 days.
    • Renal function parameters (GFR, RPF) were measured using 51Cr-EDTA and 125I-hippuran.
    • Blood pressure, electrolyte excretion, and urine osmolality were monitored throughout the study.

    Main Results:

    • Bopindolol administration resulted in a significant decrease in diastolic blood pressure (DBP) in both groups.
    • GFR, RPF, and filtration fraction remained stable despite the reduction in DBP.
    • No significant changes were observed in diuresis, free water clearance, or fractional sodium excretion.

    Conclusions:

    • Bopindolol does not impair renal function in healthy or hypertensive individuals during short- to medium-term treatment.
    • Unlike some other antihypertensive drugs and beta-blockers, bopindolol appears to have a neutral effect on kidney function.
