Background:

• Anterior urethral valves (AUVs) are rare congenital obstructions of the male urethra, significantly less common than posterior urethral valves (PUVs).
• The long-term prognosis and complication rates for AUVs are not well-established in medical literature.
• Previous studies suggested a better prognosis for AUVs compared to PUVs, with lower rates of hydronephrosis and chronic renal insufficiency.

Purpose of the Study:

• To describe the clinical experience and long-term follow-up of patients diagnosed with anterior urethral valves.
• To evaluate the incidence of complications and long-term renal function in patients with AUVs.
• To compare the outcomes of AUVs with reported outcomes for posterior urethral valves.

Main Methods:

• Retrospective review of 11 patients diagnosed with AUVs between January 1994 and June 2012.
• Evaluation of prenatal and postnatal ultrasound findings, voiding cystourethrograms, age at intervention, and clinical follow-up data.
• Assessment of creatinine levels, voiding patterns, and development of end-stage renal disease.
