  • To identify essential competencies for effective intraprofessional collaboration between physiotherapists and physiotherapy assistants.
  • To gather and analyze the perspectives of both physiotherapists and physiotherapy assistants on collaborative practice.

Main Methods:

  • A survey was distributed to physiotherapists and physiotherapy assistants.
  • Participants rated the importance of 36 elements across 6 categories: communication, collaboration, consultation, task assignment, conflict management, and roles/responsibilities.

Main Results:

  • A total of 1170 professionals responded (1049 PTs, 121 PTAs).
  • Ten core competency elements were identified as essential for effective and efficient intraprofessional collaboration.
  • Demographic comparisons consistently highlighted the same top 10 essential competencies.

Conclusions:

  • Physiotherapists and physiotherapy assistants share a consensus on essential elements for effective intraprofessional practice.
  • Open communication is identified as the most critical factor for defining responsibilities and successful collaboration.
  • Educational programs for physiotherapists and physiotherapy assistants should integrate training in communication, listening, and collaborative skills.
