Personality traits influence how quickly individuals habituate to startling noises. Higher neuroticism correlated with faster habituation, while aggressiveness showed slower habituation to acoustic startle responses (ASR).
Area of Science:
- Psychophysiology
- Personality Psychology
- Behavioral Neuroscience
Background:
- Individual differences in personality are thought to influence basic psychophysiological processes.
- Habituation, a fundamental form of learning, reflects a decrease in response to repeated stimuli.
- The acoustic startle response (ASR) is a widely used measure to study habituation.
Purpose of the Study:
- To investigate the relationship between personality traits and habituation of the acoustic startle response (ASR).
- To model habituation using latent growth curve analysis and explore personality correlates.
Main Methods:
- Data from nine trials of ASR to white noise bursts were collected.
- Participants completed a personality questionnaire based on the alternative Big Five model.
- Latent growth curve (LCM) modeling was employed to analyze intercept and slope habituation factors.
Main Results:
- A negative correlation between intercept and slope indicated that higher initial ASR levels were associated with faster habituation.
- Extraversion and Sensation Seeking did not show significant relationships with ASR habituation.
- Neuroticism was linked to faster habituation, whereas Aggressiveness was linked to slower habituation.
Conclusions:
- Personality traits, specifically Neuroticism and Aggressiveness, are asymmetrically associated with the rate of ASR habituation.
- Further LCM studies are recommended to further elucidate the complex associations between personality and ASR habituation.
