Smartphone treatments for depression showed varied effectiveness. Behavioural activation (BA) was better for severe depression, while mindfulness was more effective for milder cases, with no overall significant difference between the two interventions.
Area of Science:
- Digital mental health interventions.
- Psychiatry and behavioral sciences.
Background:
- Major depressive disorder (MDD) is a significant public health concern.
- Smartphone-delivered interventions offer scalable solutions for mental health treatment.
Purpose of the Study:
- To compare the effectiveness of smartphone-delivered behavioral activation (BA) versus mindfulness treatments for major depressive disorder.
- To evaluate treatment outcomes based on initial depression severity.
Main Methods:
- A parallel randomized controlled trial involving 81 participants with MDD.
- Participants received either an 8-week BA or mindfulness program via smartphone application.
- Depression was assessed using the Beck Depression Inventory-II (BDI-II) and Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9) at pre-treatment, post-treatment, and 6-month follow-up.
Main Results:
- No significant overall difference was found between BA and mindfulness treatments.
- Behavioral activation (BA) was more effective than mindfulness for participants with higher initial depression severity.
- Mindfulness treatment was more effective than BA for participants with lower initial depression severity at 6-month follow-up.
Conclusions:
- Smartphone-delivered BA and mindfulness interventions show comparable overall effectiveness for MDD.
- Treatment selection may be guided by initial depression severity, with BA for severe and mindfulness for mild cases.
- Further research is needed to optimize digital mental health interventions based on individual patient characteristics.
