The most commonly used immunocytochemical techniques and their applications are described. Problems relating to retention of tissue immunoreactivity and specificity of antibodies are discussed with special reference to the effects of tissue processing, presence of cross-reacting antibodies and lineage non-specificity of monoclonal antibodies.
