Background:

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the effectiveness of self-management education programs for individuals diagnosed with osteoarthritis.

Main Methods:

  • A systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) were conducted.
  • Searches included major databases (CENTRAL, MEDLINE, EMBASE, etc.) up to January 2013.
  • Intervention components and participant characteristics were extracted using validated questionnaires (heiQ, PROGRESS-Plus, HLQ).

Main Results:

  • Compared to attention control, self-management programs showed no significant benefits in self-management skills, pain, symptoms, function, or quality of life.
  • Minor, clinically unimportant reductions in pain were observed (SMD -0.26).
  • Compared to usual care, programs may offer slight improvements in skills, pain, function, and symptoms, but these are of doubtful clinical importance.

Conclusions:

  • Current evidence suggests self-management education programs provide no or minimal benefits for osteoarthritis patients and are unlikely to cause harm.
  • While some benefits over usual care are suggested, they lack significant clinical importance.
  • Future research should explore alternative delivery models and consider health equity factors.
