  • Sedentary lifestyles in older adults can negatively impact cognitive functions like verbal fluency.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the effect of a 12-week aerobic exercise intervention on verbal fluency in sedentary older adults.
  • To compare the impact of spin exercise versus a control condition on semantic, letter, and switching verbal fluency.

Main Methods:

  • Twenty community-dwelling older adults were randomized into a spin exercise group or a control group.
  • Participants underwent assessments of estimated V02max and verbal fluency (letter, category, switching) pre- and post-intervention.
  • Adherence to the 12-week intervention was monitored.

Main Results:

  • The spin exercise group showed a significant 15% improvement in category (semantic) verbal fluency, compared to 2% in the control group (P = .001).
  • Estimated V02max significantly improved in the spin group (P = .005).
  • High adherence (82.5%) was observed in the spin exercise group.

Conclusions:

  • Spin exercise is an effective aerobic exercise modality for enhancing semantic verbal fluency in previously sedentary older adults.
  • Aerobic exercise interventions can improve both cognitive function and cardiorespiratory fitness in this population.
