    Summary

    Microtia is the most common ear malformation in patients with cleft lip/palate. Its prevalence increases with cleft severity in cleft lip/palate cases but appears independent in isolated cleft palate cases.

    Background:

    • Cleft lip and/or palate (CL±P) and isolated cleft palate (CP) are common congenital conditions.
    • Auricular malformations frequently coexist with craniofacial abnormalities.
    • Understanding these associations aids in diagnosis and management.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the relationship between cleft lip/palate and auricular malformations.
    • To determine the prevalence of specific ear malformations in Finnish patients with clefts.

    Main Methods:

    • Retrospective analysis of 100 patients with external ear malformations and clefts.
    • Data collected from the Cleft and Craniofacial Centre at Helsinki University Central Hospital.
    • Comparison of auricular malformation proportions between CL±P and CP groups.

    Main Results:

    • Microtia is the most frequent auricular malformation in cleft patients, observed in both CL±P and CP.
    • Microtia prevalence correlates with the severity of CL±P.
    • Microtia in conjunction with clefts is often associated with oculo-auriculo-vertebral spectrum and Treacher Collins syndrome.
