Introduction to Statistical Process Control01:15

Introduction to Statistical Process Control

831
Statistical Process Control (SPC) is a method used to monitor and control quality within processes, particularly in manufacturing and service delivery, by employing statistical methods. SPC aims to distinguish between natural (common cause) variation and variation due to specific changes or events (special cause), allowing for timely improvements and sustained quality. The control chart, a pivotal tool in SPC, visually displays data over time alongside a central line of upper and lower control...

Healthcare Associated Infections II: Preventive Measures

4.7K
Essential infection prevention measures are based on the knowledge of the infection chain, the modes of transmission in healthcare settings, and the use of the best practices in all healthcare settings. Compulsory public reporting of healthcare-associated infection rates is needed to allow individuals and the community to make informed choices regarding selecting a healthcare facility.
The best practices for preventing healthcare-associated infections include hand hygiene, patient risk...

Inflammatory Bowel Disease V: Surgical Management

917
Surgical interventions for inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), which includes ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease, are essential in managing symptoms and addressing complications. The selection of surgical procedures is contingent upon the specific conditions and complications that stem from these illnesses.
Here are some common surgical interventions for IBD:

Methods of Documentation VI: Case Management Model

924
The case management model is a multidisciplinary approach that involves healthcare professionals from diverse disciplines, such as physicians, nurses, therapists, social workers, and pharmacists, working collaboratively to address the various needs of patients. Each healthcare professional brings unique expertise and perspectives, contributing to a more comprehensive understanding of the patient's condition and tailoring treatment plans accordingly.
For example, a patient with a chronic...

Area of Science:

  • Pediatric Surgery
  • Healthcare Quality Improvement
  • Surgical Outcomes Research

Background:

  • Quality improvement (QI) is essential for advancing patient care.
  • Prioritizing QI initiatives is crucial due to resource constraints.
  • A streamlined process was developed to identify QI opportunities in practice.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To develop and implement a streamlined process for identifying quality improvement opportunities in a pediatric surgery practice.
  • To effectively collect data on procedures and outcomes to guide QI initiatives.

Main Methods:

  • A web-based Pediatric and Infant Case Log and Outcomes (PICaLO) instrument was created using REDCap™.
  • Surgeons completed case report forms, with data entered by administrative staff.
  • Outcomes and 'occurrences' were recorded and queried for QI initiatives, using national standards (ACS NSQIP).

Main Results:

  • In 2012, data from 3597 patients and 5177 procedures were entered.
  • 220 complications, 278 occurrences, and 16 deaths were recorded.
  • Specific QI opportunities were identified and implemented.

Conclusions:

  • The PICaLO system effectively collects procedure and outcome data to identify relevant QI initiatives in pediatric surgery.
  • PICaLO is recognized by the American Board of Surgery for Maintenance of Certification 4 criteria.
