Background:

Orthopedic and soft-tissue injuries can profoundly affect an individual's life beyond physical recovery.
Understanding the psychosocial impact of these injuries is crucial for comprehensive patient care and legal assessments.

Purpose of the Study:

To investigate the effects of orthopedic and soft-tissue injuries on participation in major life roles.
To examine changes in role value and commitment following injury.
To explore gender differences in social network disruption after injury.

Main Methods:

Assessment of 53 clients with orthopedic/soft-tissue injuries using Values Scales, Salience Inventory, perceived exertion, physical capacity, functional ability measures, and the Life Satisfaction Questionnaire.
Utilized a structured interview approach for in-depth data collection.
Compared role value and commitment scores pre- and post-injury.

Main Results:

Injury significantly compromised participation in major life roles.
While the value placed on working and home/family roles changed, commitment to these roles remained stable.
Women (n=27) reported social network disruptions, particularly linked to compromised or lost working roles.

Conclusions:

Orthopedic and soft-tissue injuries lead to significant life role compromise, impacting perceived role value.
Despite changes in role value, core commitment to essential life roles persists.
Targeted support for women's social networks may be necessary following work-related role compromise due to injury.
