Summary

Civatte bodies, eosinophilic apoptotic keratinocytes, are key in diagnosing interface dermatoses like lichen planus. Though named after Achille Civatte, they were first described by Raymond Sabouraud.

Area of Science:

  • Dermatopathology

Background:

  • Eosinophilic apoptotic keratinocytes, known as Civatte bodies, appear in interface dermatoses.
  • Their presence is most characteristic of lichen planus.

Observation:

  • Civatte bodies are found in the lower epidermis and at the dermoepidermal junction.
  • These necrotic keratinocytes are a diagnostic feature in various skin conditions.

Findings:

  • Raymond Sabouraud first described these structures in 1912.
  • Achille Civatte later illustrated them, leading to the term "Civatte body" gaining acceptance by the late 1960s.

Implications:

  • Understanding the nomenclature and history of Civatte bodies aids dermatopathologists.
  • Accurate identification of Civatte bodies is crucial for diagnosing lichen planus and related dermatoses.
