Background:

Psychiatry residency programs aim to provide comprehensive training.
Assessing program characteristics is crucial for educational quality and alignment with evolving healthcare needs.

Purpose of the Study:

To characterize psychiatry residency training programs using a dimensional rating approach.
To identify variations in program focus across academic versus clinical, community-based versus institution-based, private versus public practice, and biological versus psychological orientations.

Main Methods:

A pilot study involving seven West Coast psychiatry residency programs.
Residents and faculty rated their programs on four distinct dimensions.

Main Results:

Faculty and residents agreed on most dimensions, differing only on the academic-clinical axis.
Significant inter-program variations were observed across all four dimensions.
The biological-psychological axis showed notable variation, suggesting ambiguity in "biopsychosocial" claims.

Conclusions:

Dimensional ratings offer a viable method for assessing and differentiating psychiatry residency programs.
Further development of this rating methodology is warranted for comprehensive program evaluation.
The heterogeneity in program orientations highlights the need for clearer definitions and specializations within psychiatry training.
